Early Life and Education

George Rawlinson was born in Chadlington, Oxfordshire, to Abram Tyzack Rawlinson and the younger brother of the renowned Assyriologist Sir Henry Rawlinson.

He received his education at Ealing School.

Oxford Career

In 1838, Rawlinson graduated with a First in Literae Humaniores from Trinity College, Oxford University. Two years later, he was elected to a fellowship at Exeter College, where he served as tutor and lecturer from 1842 to 1846. He was ordained in 1841 and served as vicar at Merton, Oxfordshire, from 1846 to 1847.

In 1859, he became Bampton Lecturer, and from 1861 to 1889, he held the Camden Professorship of Ancient History.
