Early Career and Recognition

Ammaniti's 1994 debut novel, "Branchie!" (Gills), was inspired by his unfinished thesis on neuroblastoma. In 1997, it was acquired by the prestigious publisher Einaudi. The novel follows a young Roman boy who travels to India to battle a tumor.

A film adaptation was released in 1999.
